This is a good album. At the beginning of track 1, Silence Kid, the band seem to be tuning or just playing their instruments like at the beginning of rehearsal which almost invites the listener into their world.
Throughout the album, the vocals are almost conversational. At one point reminding me of Lou Reed’s vocal delivery especially on Heaven is a Truck.
No single instrument dominates the track with the band functioning as a cohesive unit.
Drums provide a solid foundation while the bass supports the guitars and holds the track together and the use of effects remain controlled and never overpower the songwriting. There is no sense of virtuosity for its own sake—every instrument serves both the songs and the other musicians.
I’m putting this album into the Seed category. It deserves a more attentive listen, ideally with the lyrics available to fully appreciate Stephen Malkmus’s writing.
